The Coffee -puppies

The little Indians

The latest news from the puppybox

Thyra’s puppies or the “The Indians” as we call them, are tomorrow already one week old and Thara’s or “The Coffee-puppies, are also already three days old. In ”The Indians” development can be seen every day, on Wednesday, ”The Indians” began yawn and on Thursday and we noticed that the paw starts to “whisk” when scratching the puppy on his belly. ”The Indians” are very determined, they know exactly which “milk-tap” they want and let’s everyone know if they don’t get it or if someone is pushing them, they are therefore relatively loud now;) Thyra was for a few days quite difficult due to her enormous interest in Thara’s puppies and we or the puppies had to remind Thyra to nurse and take care of her offspring. Now the situation has calmed down and is almost back to normal, the way it was before Thara got her puppies.

Thara’s puppies, or the “Coffee puppies” as we call them, are very different, quiet and and nice, just eating and sleeping and hardly ever saying anything. Thara has, since she got over her first confusion about her offspring, proven to be an excellent and calm, very good taking care mother. As she is a bigger dog with a quite active background she might get up from the puppybox and take short “walks” in the puppyroom or she might, if the puppies are sleeping, take a walk in to the livingroom but return very quickly back to her babies.

The puppies, both litters have gained weight very well, also the little “Indian” girl.

”The Indians” weight increase, since birth until yesterday:

Brown male + 290 gr
Black male + 295 gr
Brown female + 305 gr
Little “Indian”-girl + 185 gr
Coffeepuppies weight increase, since birth until yesterday:
Caffè Doppio (dark brown with white asterisk) + 115 gr
Espresso (dark brown with white paws) + 145 gr
Caffé Latte (beige) + 155 gr

Thara's puppies, first evening

Thara's puppies, 1 day old

27.4.2010 Hapiberg's first barbet litter born

On the 27th of April, Thara (Nelum-Himalis Boheme) gave birth to her and Caravaggio's three princesses!

For those of You who know and have met Thara, know that she is never in a hurry, I think her wisdom of life is: "Nature does not hurry, yet everything is accomplished". The same way she handled the matter of giving  birth, the temperature went below 37 degrees so I didn't even notice it, just some small efforts of making the puppy crate better and a good sleep...and ooops, they were here! Three strong and healthy females, one beige and two darkbrown.

24.4.2010 Spanish Waterdog puppies born!

Thyra (Hapiberg Margarida's) and Eetu (Caraydan Chile Bravo) puppies (2 +2) were born on Saturday 24th of April, 2010!

Thyra went into labor on Friday the 23rd at about. 17 and shortly before midnight, I thought that puppies are going to be born before the morning coffee. About 3 am, all prenatal activities suddenly ended and Thyra slept beside me in bed until the morning, sometimes changing her position. In the morning I called our veterinarian who thought the best would be to go to see him at the clinic.
Our veterinarian examined Thyra and he told me that Thyra was completely open but unfortunately the contractions were very weak and the best option would be to do a Caesarean section. Thyra was prepared for the surgery and for puppies were taken out! The black male was quite big and he was stopping the others from coming out but he didn't come out either.
So at 1 pm a black male (445gr), brown male (390gr), brown female (345gr) and a little brown female (295gr) were born.

As soon as Thyra came out from the operating room the puppies were put beside her and they astarting eating immediately. Thyra was barely awake when she already wanted to start to take care f her little ones. So, the puppies were with their mother until Thyra was completely waken up and then we got permission to go home. Car trip home went splendidly, with the exception of a small noices from the puppies whenever the road was bumpy.

When we got home, Thyra went directly to the puppy pen and started to wash and clean her babies.

The puppies and Thyra are doing great. Thyra has been eating with good apetite, she goes out extremely quickly and the only sign of her having c-section is that she doesn't want to bend very far to the puppies so if she thinks a puppy is too far from her she whines and then you have to go and pick up and "return" the puppy to Thyra. But I can' stop amazing what a wonderful mother she is!

Maternity check up and waiting

Today I took Thara to the veterinarian for a "maternity" check up. Thara's pregnancy has been very closely followed up by her veterinarian to avoid any unpleasant surprises. Thara's progesterone-level was deterimed and today it is 7, when it is below 2 the labor is close, so in Thara's case it is not yet the time. Thara's veterinarian said is is very unlikely that she will give birth this upcoming weekend but it is not an exclusive option. Thara's is today 60 days pregnant so according to that it shouldn't be the time yet.

Thyra is coming closer to giving birth, her bodytemperature is still under 37 degrees Celsius, she has not eaten today, she is  gasping quite a lot and she has been making her puppy-pen a little bit. So, I think the undersigned will have a loooooong night ahead.... ;)

Is it time soon?

This morning Thyra's bodytemperature has dropped to 36,8 so she should be giving birth within 24 hours, according to books but when it is about us, nothing is sure ;) Thara's bodytemperature has also started dropping, this morning being 37,5. Thyra didn't eat this morning, Thara ate but not with  good apetite, she was quite choosy and only ate the "goodies" (read: the meat). Today I'm going with Thara to see her veterinarian to have her progesterone-level determined and after that we should now more about the situation.

Good things come to those who wait. Or do they?!

I'm sure they do but WHEN is the crucial question. Thyra's bodytemperature is still the same as it has been since the weekend (in the mornings aprrox 37,2 and in the evenings 37,6) but Thara's bodytemperature has started dropping. Thara's bodytemperature has steadily been around 38 degrees and this morning it has dropped to 37,6 degrees Celcius.

Thyra is today 62 days pregnant and Thara is 59 days pregnant. Both still eating very well and yesterday evening they both got excited and started to play with Emppu.

When being outside one should have eyes both on the frontside but also on the back, Thyra is still very keen on wanting to go and hide and just when I have commanded Thyra out of a hole under some big stones Thara has disappeared and I have to command her to get out from underneath some bushes.

My hubby, meaning Johan, is also now at home. He has one week off from work, to be at home and help me with the nursery, when we get that far ;)

I just have to say I simply love my parents, they are just so helpful and 100% into this whelping. Dad just called me this morning and asked how the situation looks and if he could go to the town and see a friend of his who is helping him with his various projects in the yard. He promised to be back home as soon as possible and even more quickly if something starts to happen :)

Time has passed by and now we are just waiting

Two weeks has just flown by, sometimes I have had a feeling that there is not enough hours in the day...

The pregnant ladies are doing just fine. Thyra has now her 60th day of pregnancy and Thara is 57 days pregnant. Thyra's temperature is lowly dropping, today being 37,2 degrees Celcius, Thara's temperature is still 38 degrees Celcius.

Both are eating with good apetite. A week ago Thara was eating quite poorly until we noticed that she didn't want to eat with her head down so we fixed it by serving her her food on a tiny table which is just the perfect height for her. Talking about spoling her ;)

I have not taken the ladies out for walks for a week now, they have just been out in the garden. One week ago I noticed that especially Thara didn't enjoy the walks anymore. The pace has slowed down for both ladies, now they just walk slowly in the garden investigating the earth.

Last Thursday (14.4.2010) I took both ladies to the veterinarian for a check up and Thara had gained weight a little more than 4 kg's and Thyra had gained a little more than 3 kg's.

Yesterday Thyra started to want to go and hide, she tried to go under every stone she possible could think of so now the dogs are not allowed to go out alone, either one of us goes out with them. The good thing about it is that the weather has been great and I have got a lot done in the garden.

Thara's "appartment"

During Easter holiday we built the "puppy box" for Thara. First she was very suspicious about it but later on she started to like it very much, now she sleeps in it but she also wants to have her food served in there :)

Progress of the ladies' pregnancy

Both pregnant ladies are doing fine. Thara is now 44 days pregnant and Thyra is 47 days pregnant.

In the beginning Thara had some "morning sickness" and she ate quite poorly but now she is almost back to normal. Thyra is eating as well as she has always. Last week I started to change their food from normal dry food to puppy dry food and they are also getting a "snack" during the day.

Both ladies are getting quite round around the belly and the nipples are getting bigger. Thyra is very proud of her belly and loves to show it. On Thyra the pregnancy can be seen more clearly than on Thara but You can clearly see that also Thara is pregnant.

Thara taking it easy, no stress :)
